USB support could be available tonight, as Zagor (Bjorn Stenberg) had said earlier today in IRC (http://www.rockbox.org/irc/reader.pl?date=20071016#12:20:54). There's a patch in the tracker that's about a day old with the USB code, but I'm wondering if it's worth adding it. If the proper USB code is released tonight, it'd probably cause quite a few problems with SVN. However, if anyone wants me to add it, feel free to let me know.

YES! Please add it if you can...why not just put a one-off build thats for seperate download?

"one-off build" - I'm not quite sure what you mean by that, but I'll see if I can add the patch tonight.

Can you add this to the build?

Saw it on ABi ;). I'm working on fixing a few build errors right now, but will have it added in the build soon.

Ok thanks

Hey, will there be any cool features added to the USB patch in later time that you know of(or could do yourself)? Like, a program that auto downloads the latest build straight to your Sansa? Or maybe, when you plug in your Sansa, the screen dims out and the fire.rock demo starts running, so you have a cool screensaver like thing when plugged in? I'm just throwing some ideas out
Keep up the good work!

My PC won't install "Rockbox serial drive", and it's not showing up in my drives when it's plugged in. Is there anything to do to fix this?

The USB support isn't official yet - sending/receiving don't work yet, so the serial drive doesn't have a purpose at the moment. As for fire.rock, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to come up with a config option for that.

Oh... that makes since. Thanks!

"One off" as in you apply the patch and then put it for seperate download, and you wont need to update it, i just wanna check out the USB =).

@Zim.
Excellent idea about the fire (and others) plugins when the Sansa is connected via USB.

Jack, my suggestion would be to hold off on adding/enabling any USB code in your build until it's known to be stable. I'm sure you'd test it yourself before releasing a build with it, but even so, we've waited this long and it seems pretty close now...

@ Major_Works: I think that he should add it. I'm not trying to be mean, but you don't HAVE to use it if you don't want to.

I'm as anxious for USB support as anyone. I just want to be sure it works properly, won't cause file corruption, etc. And I ain't the boss of Jack anyway. It was just a suggestion.
And when you say I don't have to use it, is it going to be implemented so that it's switchable? If so, then sure, add it.

Whether or not you can turn it on or off, you never know if the USB code could still adversely affect other functions. I think it would be best to wait. Just my two cents.

That's all I was trying to say, kockroach...
To paraphrase an old commercial: "We will serve no code before its time..."

I doubt the USB code could cause corruption, since Zagor has tested it without problems. However, I will probably only create one build with the USB support, just for those to test it out.
