Personalized builds

Here's another possible thought - what are everyone's comments on having personalized builds free if compiled/updated once a week, and cost a dollar or so to have them compiled more often? I have a second poll up on the right asking users whether they'd rather pay to have the build compiled more than once a week, or have ads on the site. As you can see, I'm trying to avoid having ads on the site at all costs, but I'm leaving it up to the users to decide. I'll be able to start the customized builds the day I have my DSL service back, which should hopefully be within the next few days.

All I know is that anything that winds up costing money would probably be extremely unpopular. I don't update rockbox more than once a month anyway, so once a week sounds fine.

This seems the best compromise (so far) IMO, as users will be able to have their own build and have it updated once a week, while those who want it updated more are able to pay. I'll see how it goes at least.

Since I've switched to DSL, I only update Rockbox once or twice a week anyway. I understand you're trying to avoid ads, and that's cool, but you'll only need about two anyway, right?

Just a thought.

Don't you think that this will create more confusion with new users, and of course more work for you (and i imagine the rockbox.org forums).

One build is good enough for me.

Just my opinion.

Zim - that's why I asked ;) It looks like I'll most likely be putting ads up soon.

Jeton - I'll see how it goes, and I suppose if I need to I will stop. As for the rockbox.org forums, there shouldn't be any extra work, because custom builds aren't supported in those forums.

So... how will this work? Are you going to put up that users section, and then have each person's build there so people can download?

..um Wordpress thinks that this is a duplicate comment, maybe after I type this...

I think this is a great idea, or another idea would be to have the default builds that you're already doing for yourself be free, and a customized build can be made for a small fee. Even better if that new customized build is released for free with a list saying what's in it.

I don't know what he has setup, But my idea of how this may work is he has a list of the patches with check boxes next tot hem. we then check all the ones we want in are build and then we click like compile. it then gives you a link to comeback and get the build in say like 30 minutes. and then you come back grab the build and use it as you please. You can keep it to yourself. or go and upload it to another site like one I may be setting up. and then handout that link for people to download.

Zim - users section? I might "integrate" it into that "file thing" I was working on before, if that's what you're talking about. Maybe an option to make the download private, so that it doesn't appear in the stats.

Peter200lx - The default build is and always will be free ;) The personalized builds are what I'm not sure about, in terms of whether they'll be free. A small fee for having them compiled would prevent ads, but apparently people would rather have ads instead. Either way, they'd be free to download, so users would simply need to give the download link to friends, if they wanted to share it. As I hinted above, if I "integrate" it into the "file thing" it would contain information about which patches were in it.

Cruleworld - "I don't know what he has setup" - nothing at the moment, in terms of the personalized builds. Doing nearly anything on dialup would be too hard. There's two or three wireless networks somewhere around me, but I was only able to connect to one for about a minute, and haven't been able to reconnect since.
I'm not sure whether to have a list of patches with check boxes, or simply have users explain how they want their build. Seeing that it could be hard having them explain, I'll probably just go with the checkboxes. There would also be an upload form for uploading a splash image. As for automatic compiles, I'm not exactly sure if that'd work, simply because of the chance for compile errors. The download link could be shared, if the user wants, so they wouldn't need to upload it elsewhere.

I'll probably work on/finish the "file thing" today, and set up an exception for the personalized builds, which I could have mirrored at Cruleworld's site.

I wouldn't mind paying to have a custom build. I donated money for your free builds a while ago. It seems if you can save me from learning how to compile and I have my sansa the way I like it, all is well.
I have been having issues that kept me trying to update to clear things up, but now (after a reformat) it may have been a file system error all along. Once I get a working build, I won't be looking to update...

So what's going on with the build? No news since 2007.

matmat07 - I've been stuck on dialup. I plan to do a rebuild once I get DSL again, but I don't want to now because if something breaks, it's going to be hard for me to fix it. I'm also working on preparing for personalized builds
